Our Story
Kammie
Fall 2008
I had spent almost a decade in Atlanta and had established a good life there – a great professional network, lifelong friends, and a sense of belonging to my neighborhood that I still long for a bit. But something was missing, and I wasn’t sure I was meant to be a Southern girl for life. So I started planning a return to Pittsburgh.
Winter 2009
The winter of 2009 was one of the most precious times in my life, as I spent January and February with my dear friend Rufus, and our adopted family in Atlanta. Those months were some of the most special in my life.
I had interviewed with a number of agencies in Pittsburgh. I was thinking hard about what to do, trying (as usual) to figure it all out, plan it just right, set myself up for career success.
Instead, something told me to take the job at SunKing.
Spring/Summer 2009
By summer, I was happily settled back in Pittsburgh. The job afforded me the chance to travel between Atlanta and PA, and I had a new set of friends and coworkers along with so many old friends from growing up.
One ex-coworker became a close friend. I remember hours-long phone conversations, coffee and brunch meetings, and time passing so easily.
I remember trying to fix him up with various 20-something girls who seemed to be in much greater supply than the 30-something men he promised to find for me (but never did).
Shaari’s Visit
By July of 2009, friendship has escalated to serious flirting. It was fun, but I was wary of our potential differences – age, destination (he was planning to move away, I had just moved back) – and didn’t want to lose our now dear friendship.
My sister encouraged me not to worry about these things, and over the course of a weeklong visit, thanks to her, Jon and I had our first date.
Birthday dinners, coffee shop meetings, first kisses and meeting of friends in Pittsburgh and Atlanta played out in a matter of weeks. We were smitten.
Then
I would like to say from then on it was magical, instant, and perfect. There have been wonderful trips to Atlanta, New York, California, Malaysia. Great friends made and shared – now ‘our’ friends. Family gatherings and celebrations, now ‘our’ family. The merging of apartments, furniture, books, George the cat. The creation of ‘our’ life. We’ve tackled a lot in three years, and sometimes we both long for the days when Jon had a new apartment in Shadyside and I was freshly returned to PA - when it felt as if neither of us had a care in the world. All we knew was the fun we had together and a sense of appreciation that things could be so easy, so special, and feel so right. It was a feeling I’d waited my whole life to feel.
California-bound
We’ve started a beautiful new life in San Francisco. Jon landed a dream job, rewarded and recruited from Pittsburgh for the passion that drives him to be better, more creative, ever improving. It was and is well deserved.
We have a new, beautiful apartment, in a lovely neighborhood; new friends, new jobs and we’re in one of the most amazing cities in the world. We’re starting to explore it together and I am reminded every day of how very fortunate we are for the life we have, and the future ahead.
My future husband
I have never known someone I love and admire the way I do Jon. His drive, intellect, and kindness are unmatched. I am blessed every day to be with him. He is, simply, the best person I have ever known. He is someone I look up to with big eyes and a sense of wonder that he is mine, and I am his.
Jon
Fall 2008
I'm not really sure what I was up to here. I think I was having a good time working at sunKING and living with Brando. The world was my oyster. Although I was working so much I didn't really have time to eat oysters.
Winter 2009
In the winter of 2009 I felt as if my life was up in the air. I had a job that I loved that turned into a job that I didn't. I was living with my good friend Brando who turned into Brandon once his fiancée moved in (love you guys!) I think we all got to the point where enough was enough. They were eating all my food. I had to get out. I knew I needed a change, I just wasn't sure how big of one I was ready to undertake. Anyone that knows me knows how much I have dreamed of moving to New York, and a big part of me thought, now is the time.
I weighed my options and decided to stick around Pittsburgh a bit longer. I didn't know it would be the best decision I'd ever make.
Spring/Summer 2009
I had moved on from sunKING and started a new gig with Elliance. Things were good. I got my own place and I spent most of my time kicking it in Shadyside, just as Independent Jon used to do. During my last hours at sunKING I stopped by the desk of the new girl. I figured I'd impart some wisdom on her. She looked like she needed someone to show her the ropes. We chatted for a bit, she played it cool. As fate would have it, we ended up spending a good bit of time hanging out. We had some great coffee dates, brunch dates and phone dates. I thought they were dates, maybe she didn't. Not yet.
Shaari’s Visit
By July of 2009, our flirting continued. There may have been some reservations about some age difference, but I don't remember much of that. I remember having great times together, exploring the city, learning about good food and good wine, something about a cat, and diabetes. One of my favorite days with Kammie happened while Shaari was visiting.
Then
Things took off quite quickly. We were together all the time. So many great memories around Shadyside and Highland Park. All the morning coffees at Tazza D’oro, Saturday pastries at Food Glorious Food, the mediocre thai food from the Smiling Banana Leaf, and long walks around the reservoir. We took many trips to New York, Atlanta, and California. We had the best times, ate the best food, and spent time with the best people. We had the trip of a lifetime when we visited Kammie’s family in Malaysia. Never in my life had I thought I would have traveled so far from home. I couldn’t think of a better reason to have gone.
Things were going so well, I applied to grad school with the intention of sticking out the next few years in Pittsburgh. Little did we know how much our life was going to change.
California-bound
Out of the blue, I was contacted by Apple for a job opportunity out in the Bay Area. Just as Kammie and I were getting settled in Pittsburgh we were asked to move out West. Thankfully, Kammie is the most supportive person I have ever met. She insisted this was something we couldn’t pass up, and an adventure we had to take together.
I know the transition was difficult for her. She worked so hard traveling back and forth to Pittsburgh to make sure we didn’t miss a beat. Now we are finally settled out here in a beautiful city, with a beautiful apartment and all the opportunities in the world ahead of us. We can do anything.
My future wife
So much has happened in my life over the past few years that I don’t even know how to sum it all up. I just know that Kammie and her constant support has made everything possible. She is the smartest, most talented person I have ever met. If the next few years are anything like the last few I don’t know where we’ll end up, but with Kammie I know it can be anywhere.
George the Cat
October 1 marked thirteen years of Kammie owning George the Cat. Though he and Jon have only known each other for 3½ there is no question he is now ‘our’ cat. Many of you have asked if he’ll be at the wedding but after his last cross country trip he’s decided to stay back in the lap of luxury in San Francisco.

Out of Town Guests
We are excited to share our former neighborhood with you. We think the East End is the best part of the city and it’s filled with great food, coffee, and shopping. We hope you feel the same.
Highland Park
Our first apartment, neighborhood and the beginning of our life together – Highland Park will always hold a special place in our hearts.
-
Tazza D'Oro
Kammie’s favorite coffee shop in Pittsburgh, the place Jon went with his laptop to create and freelance, birthplace to the iPhone notification mockup that brought us to Cupertino.
-
E2
One of our favorite restaurants, anywhere – fresh, local food, great staff, young, hip chef. E2 has a great weekend brunch (and dinner!)
-
Food Glorious Food
Jon's favorite Saturday morning activity – visiting the bakery to select from over 60 individual creations to buy a slice, cookie or pastry. Warning, there is usually a line but it is time well spent to figure out the perfect order.
-
Highland Park
Grab your coffee or pastry and take a walk around Highland Park or up through the reservoir. Beautiful scenery and if you’ve had a phone call with Kammie over the past few years they’ve often happened on that same loop.
Shadyside
Home to Independent Jon, we fell in love when Jon lived in his Shadyside apartment. Walnut Street on Shadyside offers great shopping and restaurants. Fifth Avenue and the surrounding Shadyside neighborhood has some of the most beautiful homes in the East End.
-
Girasole
Site of our first "date" and another of our favorite restaurants. Jimmy the owner is a true gentleman who will greet you at the door with a glass of red in his hand, terrific Italian food and wine.
-
Prantl's
Another terrific bakery and Pittsburgh classic, right on Walnut Street in the heart of the shopping district.
